Environmental science, unlike other subjects, is amultidisciplinary academic field that encompasses various domains of physical biological and social sciences. It aims towards finding the solution of environmental problems and focuses on conservation of environment. The Department of Environmental Science of the college started its journey in the year 2010 with UG courses (both in Honours and General) under the Course Curriculum of the University of Calcutta to provide a platform for the students of the society to better understand environmental problems and its solutions. Moreover, being a women-based college, the vision of the Department is to light the torch of enlightenment through higher education in order to empower women to achieve environment-related social consciousness and economic freedom along with fortifying their decision-making capacity regarding environmental issues. This Department has conducted various inter and intra-college programs, seminars and workshops to curve the student’s minds for community orientation and participation in the protection of the environment. The field of Environmental Sciences continues to grow, offering diverse opportunities for professionals passionate about environmental protection, sustainability, and making a positive impact our beautiful planet-Mother Earth. The Department has a successful academic output since students have consistently performed well, securing top ranks in the University Examinations. More than 95 % of the alumni have successfully opted for higher education (MSc, MBA, Ph.D.). Some of the alumni have also successfully passed various competitive exams (UGC NET, WBSET, GATE, etc.) and are currently working in renowned companies or research institutions. Alumni from this department are now working in Pollution Control Boards, KMC, Environmental Consultancies, NGOs, faculties in Colleges and Schools, etc. Moreover, this comparatively new and upcoming subject have huge scope for individuals looking forward to some potential career paths and opportunities, which includes environmental consultants, environmental scientists, conservation biologists, environmentaleducators, waste management, disaster management, environmental policy analysts,environmental data analysts, environmental planners, environmental engineering, and non-profit and advocacy work.The close teacher-student interaction has proved to be successful for their future endeavors, expecting better outcomes in upcoming times.
